Hello!
I would like to welcome you to the new 2017-18 school year at River Oaks Middle School. I am new to the school, and excited to be a part of the school community. For the past four years I taught at Harnett Central Middle School. I hope this year will be both an exciting and rewarding one for you.
This year we will be covering four different units for each quarter. Unit 1: Extraordinary in the Ordinary, Unit 2: Life is Not Fair, Unit 3: Waves of Change, Unit 4: Search for Tomorrow. We will be using the literature textbook and novel sets. I have also set up a google classroom that students will complete assignment on.
I would like to focus on a few ideas that will maximize our success. ELA lends itself to discussing, analyzing, writing, reading, and forming opinions. To get a better understanding of literature, we must all participate by sharing our ideas with each other. I want you to know that your ideas, thoughts, and solutions are both important and valuable. Also, I want to encourage you to take risks and to ask questions.
Class Expectations: Your student will follow the River Oaks RAMS expectations.
Respect self and others
Act responsibly
Maintain integrity
Show self-control
Grading Scale: Coursework Weighting:
A= 90-100% Tests/Projects 30%
B= 80-89% Classwork 30%
C= 70-79% Quizzes 10%
D= 60-69% Homework 10%
F= 59% and below Interactive Notebook 10%
Homework: Homework is assigned because it is a tool for developing skills and a method of preparing you for class, not of wasting your time. Therefore, you should complete all assignments with care.
Projects: Projects will be distributed/assigned in advance so that you can have adequate time to complete them. Projects are to be turned in on the assigned date.
Interactive Notebooks: Notebooks are provided and are kept at school
Lastly, I will be sending home progress reports every three weeks, as well as updating grades on a weekly basis. Feel free to contact me via email or telephone. I will communicate with you any concerns with your student.
